Sam‘s Chinese Barbecue
About This Spot
Stepping into Sam’s Chinese Barbecue is like entering a well-loved neighborhood retreat where the pace slows just enough to savor simple comforts. The modest storefront on Garvey Avenue hints at the steady neighborhood rhythm found inside—a steady hum of familiar faces and the warm scent of roasted meats filling the air. It’s a space where time feels measured by the careful craft behind each meal, not by rush or fuss.
This spot carries the quiet confidence of a place that’s been part of the community’s daily fabric for over two decades. It’s not about flashy presentation but rather the heart in every dish. The experience here is unpretentious and welcoming, the kind where you can grab a seat to enjoy your food or take flavors home to share with family. The owners’ patient, neighborly spirit resonates throughout, making each visit feel like reconnecting with a trusted family kitchen.
At the heart of the experience are the deeply seasoned barbecue offerings—roasted pork, duck, and other time-honored specialties—that feel like a gentle nod to traditions carried across oceans. These are dishes meant to be enjoyed slowly, their balance of sweetness and savoriness unfolding alongside simple sides like verdant Chinese broccoli or tender string beans. It’s a place where the food invites a moment of quiet appreciation, grounded in technique and familiarity rather than flash.
Despite its casual, no-frills environment, Sam’s Chinese Barbecue holds a subtle promise of something lovingly crafted—where every carefully roasted bird or pork belly carries the stories of family recipes and neighborhood devotion. It’s a haven for those who appreciate authenticity in every bite, and for others, an invitation to discover a slice of South El Monte’s local warmth through one of its enduring culinary staples.

Best BBQ pork and roast duck. Our family has been a loyal customer since they opened over 20 years ago! Owners have great attitude and are patient with customers. Excellent prices. Support mom-and-pops!

I was running errands and saw this place which peeked my interest. The restaurant is clean, with decent foot traffic, mainly for takeout I dined in, opting for the 2 delicacy on rice for $14 (choose any meat). I got the soy sauce chicken and bbq pork. I’d say they’re both on the sweeter side than what I’ve been used to. Had to ask for extra soy sauce. The rice itself tasted old - kinda on the dry side. service was fast and friendly. I’d give this place a 3.5, since I’ve had much better BBQ elsewhere

Good food. Good bbq. Chicken could use a bit more thorough feather removal just fyi. We don't mind it so much tho.

UPDATE: They are closed for renovations right now until 8/1/22. CASH ONLY. They have the best roasted pork and duck. It's perfectly seasoned. You won't be disappointed. I do wish that they opened earlier. They don't open til 10 am. I have never ordered off the menu. I have only ordered chop suey.

Sam’s Chinese BBQ House is such a gem. It’s an unassuming, no-frills local spot, but the roast duck is next level — crispy, juicy, and full of flavor. The prices are super fair too, especially for the quality. Definitely one of those underrated places you keep coming back to.
